Update

#iWantJumpRopeEmoji

After updating her phone’s iOS, my wife was excited to share with me the new Emojis that she now had access to.

There were Emojis for dancing, fencing, surfing, weight lifting, gymnastics, water polo, handball and even juggling.

However, there were no Jump Rope Emojis!

Just to make sure I didn’t miss the jump rope emoji, I went to the official Unicode Emoji website. Once there I confirmed that there were no single rope, double dutch, or even a jump rope by itself Emojis.

But we can change that!

Knowing my passion for the sport, and my artistic skills, my wife said that if there aren’t any jump rope Emoji, I should create them, and, thats just what I did. Below, I present you with my finished results.

However, this is only just the first step, and I can’t do this next part alone!

The next step is submitting an Emoji proposal to Unicode. Anyone can submit a proposal for an emoji character, but the proposal needs to have all of the right information for it to have a chance of being accepted. The two most important factors for inclusion are based on how many people use the unofficial Emoji and how many people are asking for the creation of an official Emoji.

What can you do to help?

To help make this a reality download and use the Emojis in your social media feeds, all while using #iWantJumpRopeEmoji.

The more people who reply, share, and use the #iWantJumpRopeEmoji the better chance our proposal will have to becoming a reality.

WELCOME BACK CHRIS HOLMES – JUMPER SPOTLIGHT: SEASON 2.2

Jump Rope Jam is proud to welcome back Chris Holmes to the show!

For those of you who don’t know Chris Holmes, you might know him best as the owner of JumpRopeVideos.com.

However, there is a lot more to Chris than his website Jump Rope Videos. Chris has over 30 years of involvement with the sport of jump rope, he has performed and taught in 11 countries, won several national championships, and one world championship.

Chris started jumping in 1985 with the Footnotes of San Antonio, coached by Roger Crozier. Chris jumped for 10 years with the Footnotes before attending college at Texas A&M University to study computer engineering. While at Texas A&M, Chris started the first college jump rope team. During that time Chris also served as an early board member of USA Jump Rope. In 2007 Chris started jumpropevideos.com as a way to share his love of jump rope with the world. He is currently volunteering by supporting World Jump Rope and coaching his kid’s team, the Rope Warriors. It is Chris’ mission to help the sport grow and inspire a new generation of jumpers that will help carry it forward.

In this episode Chris shares his love of the 90’s, Eilea discusses her experience at the very first University Jump Rope Summit at Ohio State, oh and Chris announces the new United States based organization AMJRF – American Jump Rope Federation!

Shortly after recording our video with Chris, AMJRF, the American Jump Rope Federation, announced themselves on social media to the jump rope community. For those of you who have not seen it, here is the organizations first post:

The American Jump Rope Federation wants to take jump rope to new heights. Like you, we love this sport and have dedicated much of our lives to it. Now we want to share that love with you and work together to launch an exciting new era of jump rope in America.

There are 3 core themes that need our attention:

– Development: Innovate and share the best practices of jump rope.
– Growth: Get more people jumping all across America.
– Competition: Support competition at all levels of our sport.

Welcome Tori Boggs – Jumper Spotlight: Season 2.1

Today Jump Rope Jam is proud to spotlight the amazingly talented, and, one of the most hardworking, jump rope athletes, Tori Boggs!

Currently living in Columbus, Ohio, Tori started rope skipping at the age of 5. She travels the world teaching her sport, performing in a variety of events and shows, and competing at the world-level competitions.

As a performer she continues to work as a jump roper, tumbler, acrobat, fire artist, parkour specialist, rope tumbler, actress, and public speaker.

Tori also works as a trainer, choreographer, designer, and director specializing in performance design and creation as well as athlete training and development.

Tori has been featured on The Ellen Show, America’s Got Talent, ESPN, Showtime, CNN, Robin Meade Morning Express, NBA Halftimes, MACY’S Thanksgiving Day Parade, Junior Olympis & Special Olympics, Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic International, and Buckeye Classic (largest gymnastics meet in the U.S.).

That is why, when Tori agreed to appearing on Jump Rope Jam, Eilea and I felt extremely lucky!

The first ever University Jump Rope Summit:

Ohio State Summit

Recently, Tori, working with her team, Ohio State Jump Rope, put together an amazing event at Ohio State University, the first ever University Jump Rope Summit.

The summit was held in conjunction with the first annual National College Jump Rope Championship. Following the competition there was a free workshop open to all OSU students on 1/21 & a free performance by the college teams & special guests.

The awards handed out were handmade by Boggs and the 24 other members of Ohio State’s jump-rope team.

New and Better Content:

Jump Rope Jam has always been about bringing the community together, all while providing more and better content. Our goal has not changed since we started, and, we are excited to say that we have a handful of new content that we have been working on and plan on releasing for you this summer.

We are excited to share with you all we have been working on, however, until what we have is ready to be fully released, you will just have to keep checking back here, on our social media, and our podcast to find updates. All I can say now is Videos, Apps, Games, more web content, and Events… Oh My!

Teams: HotDogUSA

Mission Statement:

The Hot Dog USA Jump Rope Team is dedicated to the promotion of the sport of jump rope as a life-long physical fitness activity. Our purpose is to inspire, motivate and educate people of all ages, while fostering local, regional, national and international jump rope competitions, workshops and performances.

Team History:

The Hot Dog USA team has been performing, competing, and teaching jump rope workshops around the country and around the world since 1980. Based at Helen Keller Elementary School in Kirkland, Washington, the team consists of about 50 boys and girls ranging in age from 6 years old to adults. Hot Dog USA is a proud member of the national jump rope organization USA Jump Rope (USAJR). We are coordinating partners with World Jump Rope.

Team Training:

Elite members of the team train six days per week when preparing for national and international-level competition, working to perfect speed, endurance, technique, strength, and freestyle skills. Hot Dog USA also has a Junior Team for younger jumpers that encourages fitness and acts as an introduction to competition.

Performance Group:

As a non profit organization Hot Dog USA raises money for travel and team expenses by performing at schools, community groups, and other sports events such as half time entertainment.

Community Service:

Hot Dog U.S.A. is also a demonstration team for the American Heart Association that performs at schools and community events to promote the “Jump Rope For Heart” program.

Coaches:

Coach Amy Canady was a teacher at Helen Keller Elementary School for 15 years, but now owns and runs Evergreen Athletics and Eastside Gymnastics Academy. She was one of the original jumpers on the Hot Dog U.S.A. team, and is a former National and World Champion. Amy has been coaching since 1987, and has been head coach of Hot Dog USA since 1992. Amy used her jump rope talent to win the titles of “Miss Kirkland”, “Miss Seafair”, and first runner-up to “Miss Washington”, all of which helped to fund her college education while also providing exposure for the sport of jump rope. Amy has also held many leadership positions in the sport of jump rope. She served for 11 years on the board of USA Jump Rope (USAJR), which is the national governing body for the sport of jump rope, as well as serving on the board of FISAC, which is the international governing body for the sport of jump rope, for 5 years. In the past she has served as President of USAJR, the chair of the National Competition Committee, as a National Tournament Director, and as treasurer for FISAC. Currently, Amy and her husband Dennis are organizers of a new organization called “World Jump Rope”, and will be running the World Jump Rope Championship and Camp this summer in Washington D.C.

Coach Kathryn (Katie) Isenhart started jumping on the Skiperiors jump rope team when she was five years old. Throughout her years as a jumper she has done many performances, countless competitions and qualified to compete at the national level nine years in a row. Katie has also taught many summer jump rope camps and after school programs in the Seattle area. Katie stopped competing the year she had her son, Jarell (who is now a Hot Dog USA Junior Team jumper), but she continued to be part of the jump rope community by serving as a judge at local and national competitions. In 2010 she became the head coach of the Skiperiors team, and she enjoyed the year she got up spend with those jumpers and learned a lot as a coach. She became a Hot Dog USA Coach for the 2011-2012 season, and she has loved every second of it! In addition to her jump rope activities, Katie also works a Montessori Pre-School Teacher.

Coach Carla LeRoy spent seven years as a teacher at Margaret Mead Elementary school. Carla has been jumping with the team since she was in Kindergarten. Carla is the most decorated athlete in the sport of jump rope today! She has numerous National, Grand National, and World Championship titles, her most recent being 2004 World Octathalon Champion, which she won that summer in Australia.

Head Coach Nick Woodard is a native of Houston, Texas. He graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business with a concentration in Business Management. Nick began jumping rope at the age of 6 with a team called Razz-Ma-Tazz and has now been actively involved with the sport for 21 years. Throughout Nick’s jump rope career he has been blessed with many opportunities to travel around the world promoting the sport through workshops, exhibitions, shows, competitions, etc. He has earned several titles including Grand National Champion and Grand World Champion. He has traveled to 30 states within the United States as well as 16 countries across 5 continents. Notably, in 2012, Nick received the honor of jumping at the Olympic games in London with Get Tricky, a well-known jump rope performance group. Nick has also performed with Cirque du Soleil, jumped for several television networks, and been featured on a documentary called JUMP!. Currently, Nick resides in Seattle, Washington where he serves as the head coach for Hot Dog USA, competes at the international level, and leads the ambassador group for World Jump Rope. Nick Woodard’s passion for children, athletes, and the sport of jump rope is evident to everyone he meets. He consistently serves as a valuable leader in the sport and strives to use his abilities to positively impact everyone around him. Nick is thankful for the gift of jump rope and looks forward to many opportunities to expand the sport in the future.

Coach Christi Hartman is currently a para-educator at Helen Keller Elementary working with special needs children. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Recreation from Seattle Pacific University. Christi was a competitive gymnast for 12 years in the independent club system and a former All-American at the university level where her career included a National Championship win at SPU. A longtime Jazzerciser, Christi’s current athletic activities also include competitive relays, marathons, and triathlons. In fact, Christi and her husband have even completed the Boston Marathon! Christi is married and has two daughters, both members of Hot Dog USA.

Billy Started jumping when he was 7 years old, and has been jumping for a total of 20 years. He started jumping with the Louisiana Jazzy Jumpers, jump rope team. As a child, Billy’s mother told him he had too much energy, so he was pushed to start jumping as an after school activity. After going to workshops, and after school classes twice a week, Billy soon fell in love with the sport, and then at some point it became his career.

Billy Jackson was Brandon’s first boss in the sport of jump rope. Billy was impressed with Brandon’s speed, and his freestyle skills. So, when he was casting for Cirque Dreams, Billy asked Brandon if he was interested, and, the rest was history.

Billy enjoys the performance and finesse side of the sport. Through Billy’s love of dance he has combined his dance techniques with his jumping techniques. Billy describes his jumping technique as, “full of Pizzazz!”

Billy’s first professional job was the movie “Jump In!” at the age of 16. Long time Jump Rope Jam listeners will recognize the title of the movie as being the same film that our co-host Brandon jumped in too. When Jump Rope Jam streams clips from the movie Jump In!, Billy will be joining us too!

Billy is apart of the famous jump rope team, Flight Crew, which you might have seen on America’s got Talent. Flight Crew is a performance-based jump rope team made up of the greatest jumpers in the world. Their mission is to spread jump rope throughout the world.

Erica talked about herself, dance, her #knowledge of #JumpRope and her #advice for #proper #foot placement and #technique

Erica Nicole has been a dancer since the age of 2. Studying Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz and Lyrical, Erica started competing at the age of 6, putting in at least 4 hours of training a day.

Erica has competed in Nationals with her dance studio and also had the privilege of dancing at numbers of steer fairs and plays. She currently teaching at Prodigy school of the arts and dancing out in the city at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway.

Erica loves dancing Ballet, however,her favorite types of dance are Jazz, and Lyrical. She loves those two types of dance because she feels that those types let her express herself more than ballet.

Erica’s understanding of the competitive sport of Jump Rope comes from the 2007 movie Jump In! which she saw when she was 12. Her initial reaction was at the surprise at how fast she saw the jumpers moving their feet. She sees a big connection between our sport (Jump Rope) and her sport (dance). Watching the movie made Erica realize how much of an intense sport jump rope is.

Jump-In-Scene-747100 After I reached out to Erica and asked her to come onto our podcast, she began watching jump rope videos on Youtube. Erica had the same reaction when she watched the videos as she had when she was 12, the sport was and is amazing to her. She also sees how much technique and skill is needed to jump successfully.

When we recorded with Erica, Brandon was not available to join our conversation, and since we had a great time talking with Erica Nicole, we plan on having her back on the show sometime soon.
